Back pain is not the only condition that has a strong mind-body connection. Of course we also treat neck and upper back pain and many cases are TMS. Chronic arm pain, also known as RSI or repetitive strain injury can often be diagnosed and treated with the TMS model. We are successfully treating patients diagnosed as irritable bowel syndrome, tension headaches, TMJ, fibromyalgia, RSD, chronic fatigue, thoracic outlet syndrome, upper extremity overuse syndrome, etc. as well. Again the key to helping people with chronic pain is to teach them to focus on their emotional tension and to "think psychologically" to treat their condition and prevent its recurrence. As with back and neck pain patients, one must first exclude more serious causes such as tumors, fractures, nerve injury, infection, etc. prior to beginning this program.

Consultations in the office where you bring your records, reports, MRI scans, or consultation reports with suitable specialists in the field to exclude tumors, colitis, nerve injury, etc. is of course the first step. If you have not had this workup, it can be initiated in our office and appropriate referrals made where necessary.

Once the diagnosis of a mind-body condition is made, such as irritable bowel syndrome (sometimes known as IBS), TMJ (jaw pain), RSD, RSI, or tension headaches, an appropriate approach to understanding the mind-body connection and dealing with the underlying tension and emotional issues is developed. Conjunctive therapy with a TMS-oriented psychologist can be extremely useful in this regard. We refer to experienced specially-trained and experienced therapists for this treatment. Individuals with fibromyalgia, chronic fatigue, tension headaches, stress-related conditions have all benefitted from our program.

The MindBody Workbook is designed to help the reader obtain emotional insight and awareness into the mindbody connection in back pain and other disorders (e.g. irritable bowel syndrome, fibromyalgia, tension headaches, insomnia, etc.) While developing this insight, learning to express emotions and connect them to physical symptoms, patient's symptoms improve! This is the essence of the TMS work, as well.  It is described further on the Ordering/Info Page.
