Symptoms vary in TMS, from severe to mild, constant or intermittent. The best way to know you have TMS is to receive a diagnosis from one of the physicians who makes this diagnosis. Since belief in this diagnosis as your correct diagnosis is so important to getting well, having the diagnosis confirmed by a medical doctor is crucial. Unfortunately, there are few doctors skilled in this diagnosis and treatment approach. There are now physicians in a number of states who have studied Dr. Sarno's methods or trained with him and are diagnosing and treating TMS.

Dr. David Schechter, a physician in Los Angeles has twenty five years of experience with this condition as a successful patient, medical student research assistant under Dr. John Sarno, and practicing physician. His background in this field is the longest of any of Dr. Sarno's physician trainees. While a medical student at NYU, he performed the first followup (outcome) study on TMS, which found a greater than 75% success rate on 177 patients of Dr. Sarno. Dr. Schechter's has now published his own clinical outcome data in Alternative Therapies in Health. His research is described, include two follow-up studies and other investigations.

Dr. Schechter has a full program which ideally begins with an office visit. Educational materials for home use are typically obtained by patients and thousands of other individuals have ordered them online including the MindBody Workbook, etc. He often sees out-of-town patients, where appropriate. Patients report that there is no real substitute for the face-to-face contact with a physician who understands the diagnosis. The office visit typically solidifies the reality of the mindbody connection and it is where the doctor can help you develop a personalized treatment program that is right for you.

Dr. Schechter works closely with a a handful of psychotherapists in the Los Angeles area who are experienced in TMS-oriented therapy. However, if you do live out-of-town, telephone follow-up is possible with both Dr. Schechter and these TMS focused therapists by telephone or SKYPE.
